SEIU Endorses State Representative, Vincent Gregory, for the Fourteenth Senate District

Thursday, December 10, 2009

LANSING — The SEIU Michigan State Council, which represents 80,000 health care, government, school and building services workers in Michigan, is proud to announce their endorsement of State Representative, Vince Gregory,  for the Fourteenth Senate District, currently held by Senator Jacobs.

“Our members have spoken loud and clear: that Representative Gregory is the best candidate and truly understands the issues facing SEIU members and their families.” said Phil Thompson, SEIU Michigan State Council president and executive vice president of SEIU Local 517M. “Not only does Representative Gregory have a proven record of standing up for working families but he has been a dedicated and decorated law enforcement officer for Wayne County.”

Representative Gregory said: “SEIU is at the forefront of the fight to provide economic security to hard-working families.  I have proudly stood alongside of them, whether it is on the steps of the Wayne County building or the state Capitol, on these frontlines in the fight for Michigan’s working families. I am honored to earn their support today.”

Candidates were required to participate in a multi-step, member-driven endorsement process that included answering a lengthy questionnaire on issues important to SEIU members, participating in a candidate forum where SEIU members had the opportunity to meet and speak with Representative Gregory in person.  He was also required to participate in a “walk a day in my shoes” of an SEIU member program.

SEIU Michigan State Council represents 80,000 workers and their families in Michigan and is part of the largest and fastest growing union in the United States, the Service Employees International Union, with over 2 million members nationwide.
